UK – Brexit: Risky business

London’s City is quite divided on Brexit. Europhiles argue that leaving would mean losing pre-eminence vis-à-vis rival European cities, while Brexiteers maintain that getting out of the Union would finally liberate the country from suffocating European rules. According to Chris Cummings, chief executive of TheCityUK, 100,000 jobs could be lost if the UK leaves the EU. Indeed, he argues that the UK’s competitive advantage is more fragile than generally thought. Similarly, Lloyd’s bank points to three important benefits resulting from EU membership, among which the fact that, being part of the single market, the country is able to attract more capital from abroad.
