The Political Visions section collects theoretical and philosophical insights into the idea of Social Europe. It offers different perspectives concerning the values that should shape the European Union, providing conceptual and normative tools to assess current European institutions and practices, and to foster European integration.
The issue of cross-national solidarity in the EU came to the fore 10 years ago, when the sovereign debt crisis unveiled the big inequalities that exist between member states. Back then, mistrust, more than solidarity, prevailed. This time, with the economic aftershocks of the pandemic, the music seems to have changed.
Despite the extraordinary challenge that Brexit has posed for the EU, the integrity and unity of the polity has been maintained until now. Even so, Brexit continues to carry a destabilizing potential for not only the EU, but also the UK.
